Deer Resistant Plants
A Landscaper’s and Gardener’s best friend: Deer resistant plantings.
Oh, deer.
What happens when you plant a garden and the deer nibble it away?
Frustrated homeowners with thwarted green thumbs, who live near woodsy areas, might be accustomed to deer visitations on their lawns. But homeowners in solidly suburban developments are surprised by the damage that deer can to do their plantings.
It’s a fact of sprawling development that hungry deer are leaving their diminishing natural environment and looking for food in our vegetable gardens, and even our flowering gardens. Plants that are marketed as “Deer Resistant” don’t necessarily mean that deer won’t eat them. It means deer might not prefer them, but a hungry deer will eat almost anything.
So what can you plant that doesn’t attract woodland creatures?
Boxwood shrubs, as it turns out, are not on a deer’s menu. Boxwoods are an evergreen shrub, so the advantage is they will beautify your lawn or garden all year long.
Another variety of evergreen that deer will avoid is the Pieris family of shrubs, which comes in colorful varieties called Cavatine and Mountain Fire.
Thinking of something less boxy than a shrub? Ornamental grasses, long and fountain-like, are lovely in a garden and do not tempt the deer. Neither do Coreopsis, a long-blooming, colorful perennial.
Here is the List of Deer Resistant Plants :
* Boxwoods
* Pieris
* Ornamental Grasses
* Coreopsis
Guess what else deer don’t eat?
Rocks. Consider decorating with accent boulders, which come in a large variety of sizes, shapes, and colors. Boulders add style and structure to a landscape, and they are, of course, completely maintenance-free.
