Possibly you installed Sod with your new Landscaping. Fertilizing your newly planted Sod in Nashville Tn helps with establishment. Nitrogen promotes rapid green leaf growth while the phosphorus and potassium will help with roots and stem growth. Strong roots hold more water which will help with dry times. Fescue holds most of it's water in the grass blades although the roots do hold some.
There are two types of types of growing zones in the continental United States: cool and warm. Tennessee is a place to grow Cool Season Grasses. The cool zone stretches from the Pacific Northwest all the way to the east coast of New England. As a rule, fall and Spring are the best times for grass fertilization in this part of the country. The temperatures are lower and the grass is exhausted from a long hot summer or just starting up for a warm season. Early spring is okay. Make sure to spread out the feeding periods for your grass as well, over-fertilizing can weaken and burn the grass.
For cool-season grasses like bluegrass and fescue, the best time to add fertilizer is when the temperatures are mild. The fertilizer can be organic or chemical, although organic tends to be easier on the lawns because they lack phosphorus agents. When done correctly, your lawn will look thick, green, and lush.

Fertilizing benefits for cool-warm season grasses
- Grow healthier and more substantial lawns
- Create heat-resistant lawns
- Are less susceptible to insects
- Phosphorus aids in root growth and development
- Helps produce oxygen and filter pollutants
- Potassium keeps lawns disease free
- Nitrogen promotes growth
Warm or transitional season grasses grow from Southern California throughout the Southwest, Texas, and the southeastern part of the United States. These warm season grasses aren’t that much different than cool climate grasses. They include Bermuda and zoysia grasses and hit their peak growth cycle during the summer months.
So, rather than fertilizing in the fall, feed the warm season lawn when it starts to turn green. Avoid fertilizing out of season; dormant grasses can be brought back life with the use of nitrogen. But using fast-growing fertilizers during winter months will weaken the lawn and make it susceptible to frost.
Three to four fertilizations periods over the course of the summer and fall should provide ample nutrients for a lush and green lawn. Cool season grasses will do fine if you fertilize in the fall and winterize in late November. Warm grasses should be given a spring feeding and then two or three more over the next six months.
